Crib exhibition in the crypt of Peterskirche

Crib exhibition in the crypt of Peterskirche

The Peterskirche right at the digging knows almost everyone. Less known is that a crypt extends under the entire church building. Down there a special find has found its place, an early Romanesque lion made of stone, which comes from the portal of the first church at this point. The Lion Room is named after him.

In Advent, the crypt becomes one of the most atmospheric places in the city centre. Since 1958, the Association of the Friends of Cribs Vienna and Lower Austria has been showing a nativity exhibition here every year. You can see cribs in very different styles, oriental as well as cribs made of roots, paper or natural materials. The exhibition is open only a few weeks, usually from the end of November to mid-December. While the Christmas hustle is raging on top of the trench, it is quiet and contemplative down here.
