Jazzland, live music under the Ruprechtskirche
The Ruprechtskirche is considered the oldest church in Vienna. Directly under it lies since 1972 a basement in which jazz is regularly played. Jazzland was founded by Tilly and Axel Melhardt, and today it is considered the oldest jazz club in the city. Axel Melhardt headed the club for more than half a century, today his son Julius Melhardt and Michael Schlacher continue to lead it.
Over the decades, around 400 musicians from the USA were on the small stage here, from blues greats such as Memphis Slim to stars such as George Benson and Wynton Marsalis. You sit under the old vault very close to the stage and hear the music as it should sound in a jazz cellar. Anyone who wants to experience Vienna away from waltzes and opera is exactly right here.
